Moving in the right direction

When it comes to being more environmentally conscious, I always say its important to know what we are signing up for. What things do we want to be moving away from and what things do we want to be embracing more of? This type of change doesn’t happen overnight, it is a process that involves many individual choices day by day that will take us where we want to be.

I’m not going to lie. It is a struggle at times, as there seems so much that needs to change, but then there are those moments when you realise that you have made a difference. That things are better, maybe not as good as they could be, but that you are making progress.

Celebrate those moments

Simon and I were sat at home the other night playing board games, enjoying some very tasty tea and we took a moment to reflect. We realised that here we were, on a normal everyday evening, drinking milk from glass bottles (organic and locally sourced) with tea (also sustainably sourced) and it was a moment of pure enjoyment. Not just for the simplicity and goodness of the moment but because of all it represented, all we had fought for and achieved.

Now, I know it seems small and insignificant, but we celebrated because we have actually changed our habits. We have put our values into practice. Yes, in a small way, but in a small way that reoccurs daily. 7 days a week! That kind of thing adds up and it is just one of many small changes we are making every day, every week, to be kinder to the planet.

No matter where you are on your sustainability journey it’s good to pause and remind yourself, regardless of the pace, that you are moving in the right direction.

Moving to alternative options

When it comes to making better choices, and avoiding conventional options that are environmentally harmful, I believe there are three options available to you.

  1. Go old school

  2. Embrace innovation

  3. Let go of unsustainable standards & practices

All of these can save you money, some involve simple swaps, others take a bit more work to iron out. In the following three blogs I will explain each one and give you real life examples that will save you money.

Until next time - look out for moments to celebrate moving in the right direction!
